The M22 Rock Crusher would come later to accommodate the heavy twist of Chevrolet's big-blocks in the mid-1960s. The M20 and M21 transmissions produced from 1963-'74 are easy to identify in both wide- and close-ratio units. The M22 to come later in 1967-'74 is also a close-ratio unit, but much stronger than the M21, with a higher torque capacity.
8. The M22 Rock Crusher 26-spline input shaft sports a wider gear for greater torque capacity. Just because you've found a 26-spline input shaft does not mean you've found an M22 input shaft, which is made of a stronger alloy. The standard 10-spline input shaft found its way into new Muncie M20 and M21 transmissions from 1971-'74.
I discovered (with help from Jerry M) that the drain and fill plugs in my 3/69 build date Muncie M22 transmission were likely from either a late 1969 or post 1969 production M22. The plugs are made by Lisle and I have seen them stamped with a P, W (with underline), the Lisle script only, with the Lisle Magnetic 2 script and Lisle Magnetic 3 script.

I've installed them both.And In my opinion the M-22 is way better.The M-21 was close ratio but I've broken quite a few more of those,Than a M-22.The M-21 was good enough for a street driven cars,And racing.But the M-22 was far superior to it.I've only broke a M-22 twice.And I broke a M-21 more than 8 times.

Many people have guesses about deciphering M-22s. Like grooves in the input shaft and numbers and etc etc... The only way to tell is to open the case and measure the gear angle from the shaft centerline. M-20 and M-21 have 45 degree gears and M-22 have 22.5 degree gears. You are Kind of right about your input shaft rings, that is true to a point (roughly about 68) you also have to look at the countershaft pin, some have a 1 in. shaft and some have a 7/8 in shaft, if you have an EARLY muncie with NO groves on the input and a 1 in pin then chances are that its a M22 (I said CHANCES ARE).

Those casting numbers don't identify the gears inside the tranny. The 3857584 tailhousing was used from mid-65 through 1970 on all Muncies. The 3925660 main case was used on all 1968 and 1969 Muncies. So, assuming these parts are all original to this tranny, it would be a 68 or 69 Muncie. There should be more numbers stamped into the case.
